Shoulda Seen It Coming

Production
Corporate learning has a reputation problem. Pluralsight wanted to fix it — not with a manifesto, but with a mockumentary. Two seasons, nine episodes, and one borrowed visual language that audiences already trusted: The Office. When the camera becomes a silent co-conspirator, even a skills gap can get a laugh.

Approach & Methodology

Designit handed us a clear tonal target and trusted us to hit it with every production decision. Lens choice came first. Zoom lenses with a mid-range focal length gave us that slightly restless, human quality — the feeling that an actual camera operator was reacting to the room rather than composing for it... which was actually exactly what happened. No locked-off beauty shots. No deliberately lit perfection. Lighting had to feel very natural and, most importantly, allow us to move freely about the locations. The camera itself became a character. We leaned into the fourth-wall breaks the scripts set up, but found additional moments on set where a slow, uncertain push or a quick reframe could add a beat of comedy the dialogue hadn't accounted for. Those small moves — the ones that suggest the camera operator almost missed it — tend to get the biggest reactions from an audience already fluent in the format. Over two seasons and nine episodes, the through-line was consistency without stiffness. The cast was sharp and the scripts gave them room to breathe, so the job on our end was to stay nimble enough to catch what happened between the written lines. A mockumentary lives or dies in those unscripted half-seconds. We kept the rig light, the setups fast, and the operators ready to follow wherever the scene went.
